Eco Cubs

This week’s session was all about the environment and several of the Cubs made pledges as to what they could do to help – see photo.  We also did blind tastings of plant-based versions of some Cub favourites (cocktail sausages, mild cheddar, pepperoni, chicken slices, milk).

It’s fair to say, although some of the Cubs enjoyed tasting the plant-based versions, the vast majority were much less keen, and judging by their reactions (ew! yuck! gross! slimy!) we won’t be making significant changes to our camp menus anytime soon 😊!  On the bright side, they did make some good windmills!

Cubs Report 2021

   |   By

It’s been a very challenging 12 months, going between F2F & virtual meetings, in bubbles but Sarah. Katy and I have managed to still produce a varied programme for the Cubs to enjoy.

Sebastian the Goat joined one of our early Zoom meetings and we had an online cookery session making spring rolls as part of the International badge – absolutely delicious! Hugely popular was Captain Doug Brown’s experience as a pilot with BA and all the different planes he’s flown. Still online, the Cubs made their own family coat of arms and found out all about Sir Edward Henry (who’s buried in South Ascot Churchyard) who invented finger printing and did their own with lead pencils.

Hawaii Five-O? Almost!

Earlier today some of the 1st Sunningdale Cubs took part in the Berkshire Scouts Dragon Boat Regatta at the Wokingham Waterside Centre, near Reading. With some great teamwork, Alfie, Benoit, Emily, Etta, Harry, Ollie, Owen, Peter and Tom, paddled to the drumbeat provided by Ollie’s Mum Wendy. They did very well, winning one of their heats and going through to the semi-finals.

Congratulations Sunningdale Dragons – brilliant effort!!!

Cubs in Swinley Forest

It Never Rains but it Pours!

   |   By

One of the Cubs’ favourite activities of the year when each of the Sixes builds a shelter out of material found in Swinley Forest. With all the Six safely inside their shelter, the Leaders use a watering can to test how waterproof it is….. and we see who gets wettest!

Cubs at Bears Rails

Phew …..what a Scorcher!

   |   By

The Cubs spent a day at the Bear’s Rails Campsite in Windsor Great Park. Although it was one of the hottest days of the year, the Cubs lit fires (!) and heated some water, made giant bubble wands, and played various team games, including using these team skis. We hiked to the Copper Horse and afterwards watched the Explorers build rafts and race across the pond. The day finished with a BBQ and rousing campfire.

A notable occasion in the rain…. GSL Hilary presents Dominic Leigh with his Diamond Chief Scout Award – it’s the highest a Scout can achieve before the Queen’s Award, and there’s not been one in 1st Sunningdale in living memory.

June 2020

During Lockdown we had three Virtual Camps. We had more than 30 families attending each time, with Young People camping out in their back gardens or in dens in their bedroom. There were lots of fun activities and challenges to complete on each of the themes and at the “Sunningbury Festival” we had great musical performances from some very talented Young People.
