Sunningdale Stars Quiz Triumph

   |   By

On Friday 3 December a team from 1st Sunningdale (Sarah, Hannah, Matthew, Gill, Graham, Micky, Hilary & Dave) joined the 1st South Ascot Quiz Night. We called our team “The Sunningdale Stars”, hoping not to come last, so no one was more surprised than we were, that we won!!

We are now the proud holders of the silver-ish stag’s head trophy (in Micky’s left hand) for the next 12 months!

It was a very successful fund-raising event for 1st South Ascot and a great night was had by all.

Remembrance

This week our theme at Cubs was Remembrance. We walked down to Holy Trinity Church to see the War Memorial and look at the War Graves in the churchyard. Reverend Jon showed us the plaques inside the Church and the Cubs lit a candle in remembrance. Ahead of Sunday’s parade the Cubs also got “crafty” making poppies using paper plates, torn up pieces of red tissue paper and circles of black glitter. Each Cub wrote their name on a leaf and once it was all dry, Katy created two very impressive wreaths. We finished the session by investing four new Cubs – Thomas Bui, Etta Rose, Oscar Heimann and Jack Tunnah.

1st Sunningdale’s October Quiz night at Holy Trinity Church was a night of gastronomic delights and cerebral challenges.

With over 168 attendees, across 21 teams, the Scout group was able to raise an impressive £3,919 for its ‘New Hut’ project, whilst also contributing to the church’s ‘Transforming Trinity’ project.

Beavers and Cubs attend the Harvest Festival Service

   |   By

There was a good representation of Beavers and Cubs at the Harvest Festival service this morning at Holy Trinity Church, Sunningdale. Harry King and Oscar Whittaker (both Cubs) took part in the service, saying prayers and doing one of the readings, whilst the Beavers made a bright turquoise line as they took our supermarket vouchers up to the collection baskets.

The collection will be shared between the Bracknell Food Bank and the church’s own Food Bank, which was created and has been running successfully since the first lockdown.

Well done Beavers and Cubs!

Annual Celebration and AGM 2021 – held on Zoom, Sunday 19th September

   |   By

If you were unable to join us, the leaders gave a wonderful update as to what the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers have been doing during the last 12 months. It’s been very challenging going between face-to-face & virtual meetings, in bubbles and then not, so it was great to be able to acknowledge all the hard work done by the leaders who have carried on Scouting alongside their own family life, home schooling and working from home.

Our Chair, Micky, gave an update on the new hut project, current timelines, and funding proposals. He also shared a first view of the architect’s drawings, which will be on display during the open days at the hut on October 16th and 17th (10.00am-11.30am). The fund raising is going well, with the upcoming Quiz Night on 7th October and we are selling raffle tickets online, with some great prizes donated by local businesses. We also announced The 300 CLUB – a monthly lottery, where there is a 1 in 50 chance of winning at least £50 each month.

Even with all the difficulties this year, some young people have still managed to earn bronze, silver, gold, and platinum Chief Scout Awards and for the first time in the history of 1st Sunningdale, we had our very first Diamond Chief Scout Award too. Congratulations to everyone who has achieved these prestigious awards – very well done.

We also celebrated all the Chief Scout Commendations and Commissioner awards for many of our adult volunteers – all very well deserved.

Beavers Report 2021

   |   By

We started the term with being able to meet face to face but we were restricted in terms of the number we were allowed to have at our sessions. We split into 2 bubbles and held our sessions at Earlywood. It was great to be back together and especially enjoying be outdoors. There was lots of measures put in place to keep everyone safe but the Beavers and parents were all great. Charlie and I had help from Dougie Webb at our sessions and it was great to have him with us. We enjoyed games, scavenger hunts and cooking on fires.

Explorers Report 2021

   |   By

Another year for the Explorers that has been hit by Covid. During the lockdowns we joined in with the Group online sessions – who will forget the Taskmaster challenges we filmed, with the ‘Guess the number of objects down the trousers’ a particular favourite! We also helped with the virtual Winter camp flag-grab around Sunningdale, and the online Survival Camp.

When we were allowed to get back together in person the Explorers did so with enthusiasm – after the second lockdown period we met up at Earleywood, and they let off energy with three of the biggest fires that Earleywood has probably ever seen. And this was a great welcome (we think) for our new Section Assistant Johnnie, who joined us this year and is now part of the leadership team.
