Explorers on the Beach

In the dim and distant past of the early summer holidays, the Explorers took a trip for a few days down to Romney Marsh. As a leader, I was delighted to go back to scenes of childhood holidays (and reacquaint myself with the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway) but in addition to the unique scenery to be found there, there was also much fun to be had.

We were staying in a local groups hut, which meant that although we were camping, we had the luxury of a proper kitchen and oven (so, pizzas, obviously!) There was a huge storm the first night, but all the tents remained upright and we were ready for some sand yachting. The wind was still strong so we couldn’t go too far, but everyone got the hang of it and there were some pretty impressive wheelies.

The highlight of the trip was the sea fishing expedition. We set out in sunshine but conditions were a little iffy and we were hit by some squalls. However, fishing continued but despite our best efforts, we were rewarded (or rather Toby was rewarded) with one small fish. Ah well, it was the taking part that counted.

There was also axe throwing, an incredibly interesting trip to be shown around Dungeness Lifeboat Station, a hike up the lighthouse, a nature walk around the reserve, birdwatching at the local RSPB reserve and fund and games. Everything was finished off with fish and chips and a barbeque on the beach as we watched the sun go down.
