Our much-loved hut on Sandy Lane has been a hub of activity for 1st Sunningdale Scouts since 1967. Whilst our programme of badges and activities has evolved throughout the years, unfortunately our hut has not.
Inaccessible and tired, it’s time our hut was redeveloped, enabling new generations to experience Scouting in a safe, fresh and fun environment. We aim to maximise the space we have and make access easy for all, with the end game of opening up 1st Sunningdale to even more young people in the area.
Following a review in 2020 it was identified that the roof, flooring, toilets and entrances need replacement and site accessibility enabled through-out the site. The total cost of this work was estimated to be over £50,000 and additional works would be required to update plumbing, electrics and heating over the coming years. It was determined by the Executive Committee in consultation with the Leaders that we should take this opportunity to rebuild to establish a solution appropriate for the long term predominantly funded through grants from external charities and foundations.
With ceilings falling down, toilets out of action and a space that is not accessible, repairing is just not enough. Replacing the hut means that we could make the most of our space and install wheel-chair access and toilets, so all young people can enjoy the full Scouting experience. We will insulate the building to reduce noise for our neighbours and reduce loss of heat from the building. We will install eco-friendly and energy efficient lighting and make sure that our energy and water consumption is sustainable, and our kitchen will be extended so we can cater for more young people at Scouting events. We will also be including bio-diverse flora in our grounds.
If you are able to help in any way, be it advice, donations or sponsorship opportunities, we’d love to hear from you!
